Do you think Startup owners can be successful CEO's or managers?

Do you think startups owners can be successful as successful managers of the company, especially if they have an unique and successful product. I know every startup thinks that his product is the best and nobody can understand the running of the same much better then the owner, but do you thinks it is advisable or should they just hire experts to take the company forward and take a back seat.

It is true that a good percentage of owners or entrepreneurs don't fully realize the work involved in effective execution of their business ideas or plans. While they may hire experts, I don't think they can or should take a back seat but get hold of the requisite skills through proper mentoring, training and guidance for sustained success.

Entrepreneurship is of 2 types - one who driven by passion and the other who is driven by opportunity..... in both cases they are bound to have limitation at different stages.....

One of the fundamental belief that should sink in is - "what I can do is so much....and we can do will be much more"......and also it is important to build a structure to the organization at a formative stage......there should be clearly defined functions and resources to be aligned to the function.....

The CEO in most cases would be handling multiple roles and as and when the organization goes through growth the CEO can start letting go of some function and start handing it over to professionals with the right experiences...

A succesfull Entrepreneur is one who can start the business and run the same. May be as a n CEO/ MD what so ever. Its his/her own baby, so special care and dedication is required. It comes with time. They should not take a back seat at all. they should hier people and train them to understand the product/services the way he/she knows it. Visit my group Chinict, you know more about the same.

Yes, they can be successfull CEOs/Leaders perhaps they keep a few things in mind and consider a few things. They must treat the company as a their own baby so that they know how to nurture it, set the correct expectations, set the correct milestones, timelines. Not to over expect meaning not to start expecting a profit from the day 1 or 6th month like u dont expect your baby of 1 year to start running / gossiping. The other factor to be considered is to take care of the people who join you in begining, have their comfort zone. Not only old employees, but the other employees also. Moreover, it must be a fair combination of types of leadership but with a greater transparency in the working. No game playing. If these factors are considered, no one can stop the CEO to be a successfull CEO/Leaders as during this phase the company will grow, have revenue, profit and they will have all the reasons to cheers.

Plenty of 'scientific' research has been done in the past few years to understand the entrepreneur's psychology. Similarly, lot of authoritative work has been done on scaling up of a business, management transition, etc. I would summarize the my reply into the following points:

1. Majority of the entrepreneurs appear to have inherently deficient with CEO skills!

2. The entrepreneurs who manage the transition successfully seem to team up with people (in the capacity of partners, employees, consultants, etc.) that have the skills they lack.

3. Promoters carry phenomenal amount of business knowledge. The companies which manage to hold on to their promoters through the growth phase seem to have substantial advantage against the companies which fail to.

What types of startup websites that investors like to Acquire or Buy out? eg: HOTMAIL.COM FOR 400 millions

This question has been floating in my mind for quite a long time, and i bet many people need to know the same. In this time of the Internet age people are building up fancy websites, great content site, fantastic blogs, really interesting sites. But the first thing on their mind is that someone will buy it like say hotmail.com or the indian ebay site baazee.com . What types of sites are these investors looking at......and what are the conditions that describe a potential acquisition of a website. and if someone has a high traffic site, do they go about approaching the investor, or the investor finds them??????

This is really bugging me and i bet it is on the minds of lots of other people.

Bangalore: Byrraju Ramalinga Raju, 54, chairman of Satyam Computer Services Ltd and lover of science fiction works by Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke, will be remembered in Indian business history—not the way he would have wanted, as a successful software entrepreneur, but as the perpetrator of the country’s biggest corporate fraud, one that saw his company resort to fiction to burnish its performance.

It used to be said that Hyderabad had two major landmarks: the Charminar and Ramalinga Raju, who created the company, Satyam Computer Services. Satyam means truth, but Raju, who resigned as chairman on Wednesday, owned up to creating a tissue of lies.

Ramalinga Raju belongs to a family of farmers from Bhimavaram near the Andhra Pradesh city of Vijayawada. His father, Satyanaryana, helped create the family fortune in a small way, shifting in the early 1960s to Hyderabad and starting a textile business even as he bought more land for farming. Ramalinga Raju has in the past said that it was his father who inspired him to start Satyam.

Ramalinga Raju recently told Business Today magazine that after returning from the US with a master’s in business administration (MBA) degree from Ohio University, “I had all the enthusiasm and passion to do something…of being an entrepreneur. A friend told me about a part-time teaching opportunity at the Administrative Staff College of India. This really appealed to me. But, in late 1977, over dinner one night, my father told me: It is always important to stay focused and to avoid distractions.”

Ramalinga Raju chose to enter the relatively new business of providing software services to international customers from India. Satyam, launched in 1987, started offering such services initially onsite to tractor maker John Deere and Co. In 1991, the company raised money through a share sale and listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

It was in 1994 that Satyam got its big break when it allied with Dun and Bradstreet Corp. The partnership was short-lived, but by the time it ended, Satyam was well on its way to growth.

What separated Satyam from rivals such as a Tata Consultancy Services Ltd or an Infosys Technologies Ltd was Raju’s preference for executives and associates who spoke the same language he did: Telugu.

“For Raju, family, caste and those who could speak Telugu came first. I am not saying he was not a professional, but other things being equal, he would look at things in that order,” said a former employee of Satyam Infoway Ltd, the Internet firm Raju eventually sold to a non-resident Indian entrepreneur, Raju Vegesna.

Raju’s brother Rama Raju was managing director of Satyam and till 2000, his brother-in-law Chinta Srinivasa Raju used to head a key division.

“At one point of time there were so many Rajus (in the company) that it would be difficult to identify who was who,” said an executive at a software firm, who did not want to be identified.

Raju’s food preferences were also local—he preferred spicy Andhra food, though he admitted to this writer once that he also liked hot Thai food.

Diversified interests

Raju was always keen on other businesses, and the controversy over Satyam’s attempt to buy two Maytas companies wasn’t the first such he faced.

In 1998, the publicly listed Satyam Computer Services had to declare that it would not invest in Satyam Constructions Ltd, a family-owned company, after news reports to that effect roused investor ire. Satyam had also floated a clutch of companies, including one for the Internet (Satyam Infoway) and to address large customers (Satyam Enterprises). At various points of time, these were either merged back into the parent or spun off and sold.

In 2000, at the height of the dot-com bubble, Satyam Infoway paid Rs500 crore to Rajesh Jain-owned IndiaWorld, which was essentially a clutch of websites. In 2001, Satyam Computer Services listed on the New York Stock Exchange (Satyam Infoway did so on Nasdaq in 1999).

With the real estate sector booming, the Rajus re-entered the business. Maytas Properties Ltd (Maytas is a palindrome for Satyam) and Maytas Infra Ltd were looked after by Raju’s sons Teja Raju and Rama Raju. Maytas Infra even won the Hyderabad Metro rail project. Satyam, however, had to cope with tough competition and a tougher business environment. The company also had to meet analyst and investor expectations.

In a letter to Satyam’s board on Wednesday, Raju confessed to having cooked the company’s books and overstated revenue and profits. He added that Rs5,040 crore of the cash that is supposed to be on Satyam’s books simply doesn’t exist.

Srini Raju, who stepped down as executive director of Satyam in 2000, said Raju’s revelations came as a surprise to him. He now runs Peepul Capital Llc., which has $325 million (Rs1,580 crore) of funds under management. He also runs news channels in several languages under the TV9 brand.

“I am shocked and yet to digest what has happened,” Srini Raju said. “Satyam Computer is one of the iconic companies of Indian software industry and fudging of accounts by such a company will have a very high impact on the industry as a whole.”

Raju must have known this as his letter indicates. His letter refers to “the tremendous burden on my conscience” and likens Satyam’s descent into financial purgatory to “riding a tiger”.

The Day Sachin Gifted Rs.12 Crores for the Great Indian Dream!

The world has been written about Sachin, but this is something that has gone completely unreported. That's how Sachin wanted it to be.

It was 2003. Without much expectations, my team had gone to Sachin to invite him for the launch of my book, The Great Indian Dream. He obviously was busy but he kept the copy of the book. One fine afternoon in 2004, we were overjoyed to receive a call from Vinod Naidu, then the Director of Worldtel, informing us that Sachin had gone through the book and wanted us to meet him. We had no clue what was in store for us. My colleague Deepak Shah went to meet him and what followed was a dream come true for anybody. Yes!! The Master Blaster had agreed to endorse our Great Indian Dream Foundation advertisements!! An association that lasted for 3 years!!! At that time, the market rate for a Sachin Tendulkar endorsement was Rs.4 crores per year and he had decided not to charge a penny for the same from us. Not just that, he had decided to give us one day to shoot an ad film with him too. And that's where I met Sachin. A day that will forever remain etched in my memory. I was to shoot the ad film myself and (with my wife and son) had reached an hour early, completely unable to control my excitement. Like all thoroughly professional people, in the most unpretentious manner, in a simple crushed looking shirt, Sachin landed up right on time at 10 am!! Our shoot went great, not just because along with cricket, Sachin had also mastered by then the art of acting and given lovely first takes, (those who have never realised this fact consciously should try and remember his ad for Pepsi with the Big B some years back; it was tough to say who was better... at least in that ad!!) but more because Sachin was in love with the lines he had to say. He believed in the lines, he made that very clear to us, spoke out each word from his heart, and we all knew he was most genuinely involved. After all, how many times have such big people, in all senses, on their own offered to campaign for a cause without any kind of returns whatsoever.

There were three things that I would perhaps never forget from that days meeting. First... Those days, Sachin had taken a few breaks from cricket due to his tennis elbow. Even on that day, he was in evident pain. And he was hurt the way media doubted his reasons. There was pain in his eyes when he was explaining how bad the pain could be and how impossible it was to play with that pain. And I knew he would not even bother to explain it to any media person, the hurt in his heart, more than the elbow, was all too clear. Second... We had asked him if he would want to change his shirt. He said he didnt want to, as the ad was for the masses and he wanted to look like the man on the streets rather than Sachin the celebrity. And finally, we of course wanted to give a press release about this great philanthropic act of his; but Sachin requested us to not tell the media about it, since he was doing it more for the cause of India and from his heart rather than for any publicity (and at that time he had no clue that one day I would start a magazine of my own and reveal it all here). I remember his parting words; he told us, Do anything for the cause of making India free of its ills and I am there with you guys.

Before he was to leave, his son Arjun, daughter Sara and wife Anjali too came down to the sets. We had a small cake cutting ceremony to thank him and like a little kid, he enjoyed the cake (and the carrot and orange juice) and asked for more of it since he couldnt hide the fact that he loved the cake too much. We were too thrilled. After he went home, we sent across another of the same chocolate cake from the Taj Mumbai for him! And yes, most of you might have seen the print campaign of The Great Indian Dream Foundation with Sachin in it (at least FEMA noticed it and promptly sent us a notice for it, wanting to know how much foreign exchange we made through our foundations activities!!!), but not the related TV campaign. The Foundation couldnt manage enough funds to go for it. But I must write the lines that Sachin so loved and spoke... He said, Let us work towards an educated, healthy and poverty free India... You may say I am a dreamer... Let me not be the only one... Come share the dream... And he ended by saying something that he would say for nothing else, and for no money, but the dream for a better India. His ending punch line was, Theres more to life than cricket!!!

I dont think anything can better describe the real greatness and humaneness of this man whom the entire country so loves. I wrote about his gift of Rs12 crores on the heading, more to grab the attention of you all towards his great deed than for the monetary value of what he did. It will be too demeaning of me to even try and quantify the value of what he did for us for the sake of the dream of a better India. As they say, some things in life are priceless
